Gordon Brown likes to present himself as a man of conviction but Peter Oborne's describes how he tries to be all things to all people:
"On the one hand, he hates Margaret Thatcher, on the other hand he admires her. He represents the workers - and sucked up to the unions during his leadership campaign - while being best friends with business tycoons. He is pro-European, but also, when it suits him, anti-Europe. He supports Scotland at football, yet claims that Paul Gascoigne's goal for England which knocked the stuffing of his country's team in 1996 was his most memorable moment in football. He's a conviction politician, and also all things to all men. He's a man of conviction - who believes in everything."
